New Year's Resolution

Hi Folks, time flies when your having fun and here we are in 2012. One of my New Year's resolutions is to keep up with my blog, finishing up some thoughts and ideas I started in 2011.

Just a quick update for now.

A few wonderful things has happened with Bowersock Gallery.We just had our first opening at our newest location, in lovely historic downtown Mount Dora, FL. The turn out was better than we had ever anticipated. We met some lovely people, made new friends; best of all, folks found our artists highly collectable. Not to mention that we made it through the Boston International Fine Art show, with wonderful reviews. Thanks everyone for a fabulous 2011.

Also, I just learned that Mount Dora is getting in on the Encaustic movement, somethings happening on January 28-29 2012. I'll fine out more. It's wonderful to see! Art is Alive.

Wonderful news from our Print Maker; Sean Hurley's "Subterrane" was recently added to the collection of the Ogunquit Museum.

His etchings "Cement Factory" and "Pigeon Cove" were selected by Juror Jim Dine (internationally known printmaker/artist) to appear in the Boston Printmakers 2011 Biennial, opening 2/27/11 at the Danforth Museum in Framingham, MA.

Artists Tips on Approaching Galleries

In my next few posts I would like to share a few tips on artists approaching Art Galleries. This is just from my experience and does not apply for all galleries. Every gallery is different and has their own set of policies and guidelines, but most are similar.

First off before all else. I highly recommend seeking out a professional, in art education and promotion, to teach you the business side to your art. It may come at a price, but from the proper professional it's worth every penny (it will open doors on a professional level). Also, aid you in avoiding those looks from gallery owners when you go in at the wrong time or when their season is in full swing and you ask for representation.

I am fortunate enough to own a gallery, with my partner, and work as an artist where I have been able to put this valuable information to use. I see the business side everyday, but before it all happened I took the time to educate myself though classes, private and credited. Through education, it taught me how to approach galleries and it prepared myself for the business side of art. You may be the greatest artist in the world, but lacking the business sense makes it a bit more difficult in getting your work out there. An individual I recommend truly has helped my career. She opened my eyes to ideas on how to create a strong bio, artist statement, preparation, and what galleries look for from artists (the business side to art). Her name is Jeanne McCartin, maskmakernh@aol.com, seek her out she is worth it and trust me you won't be disappointed.

International Encaustic Conference

Black and White Friday

We recently had our Black and White Friday exhibition, the latest color-themed exhibition at the gallery. The event was actually a twist on the annual “Black Friday” an economic term for the largest shopping day of the year, the Friday after Thanksgiving, that traditionally pushes business into the black - or profit margin. We thought it would be a fun challenge to use the theme to challenge our artists and it worked. Our artists stepped up to the challenge creating some rare, unique, and wonderful works of art.

Jayne Adams hasn't worked in black and white since her college days, but she stepped up to this challenge and created three amazing pieces.

Kim Bernard became so inspired by the idea she is now creating a series of black and white encaustic's, beginning with two currently on show.

Dustan Knight created her koi series in black and white with just a hint of red. This was a nice surprise to see her stretch her skills as a fine art watercolorist.

Not to mention, Michael Palmer came out of now where and created his Favela series in just black and white ink. The show also feature Jeanne’ McCartin’s wall sculpture from the haunting “Dreams and Nightmare" series.
Even Carol Roll, surprised us at the last minute by creating a small mache sculpture and Lauren Pollaro created a wonderful small mixed media assemblage.

Jayne Adams takes on Halloween

Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition. Halloween has long been thought of as a day when the dead can return to the earth, and ancient Celts would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off these roaming ghosts.

I wanted to share these rare, ghostly and fun paintings by Jayne Adams. They are spectacular, fun, well painted, and the compositions are wonderful.

Sydney Bella Sparrow

I recently discovered "Unknown" on my last trip to Thomson's home. He painted this masterpiece in the late 1970's as part of his wind series. This is one of the few pieces left in this series, in fact the only large piece (50 x 40) still available.

Tidbit on Mr. Dennis Perrin

On my last visit to Perrin's studio, he showed me the location where he creates his masterful paintings. Once I saw the pond and location I knew there were pictures to be taken.

Dennis led me down a secluded path, suddenly I realized how quite it was you could hear the birds, crickets, frogs, and a slight rustle of the leaves. I could feel myself relaxing, merging myself into Perrin's world. Once we walked to the end of the path it opened up to an amazing and beautiful pond full nympheas all along it's edge. The colors were peaceful and soft just like his paintings. I wasn't ready to go back to Provincetown that's for sure, but I knew I had to get these masterful paintings to the gallery for you to enjoy.

Art for the Generations

As your children grow up wouldn't it be nice to pass on the one gift, that keeps on giving... Art!

Investing in art early can be rewarding, enjoyable, a conversation starter for both you and your children and it can be handed down to them to boot!

Here is how you can easily get started;

First, find a piece of art that you love then do some research on it.

Second, ask some questions; the questions you want to ask are:

How long has the artist has been paintings?
What does the artist's resume / biography look like and reveal about their artistic style?
What key information does the resume / biography reveal about the artist's motivation and artistic direction?
What is the educational background and who have they studied under.

Some other points to consider:

Check out what museums and colleges and museums are collecting your favorite artist. Colleges invest in art for the future and museums invest not only for value but to bring in the largest crowd.
Finally, ask yourself "why do I want to start collecting/investing in this artist?"

You can ask the gallery for this information and any reputable gallery will be happy to provide you with this information.

For instance, William Thomson's art is collected by Marietta College and The New Britain of American Art, whom just pulled his work from their private collection for "The Great American Watercolor" show.

Also watch who is collecting the artist, for instance Michael Palmer has collectors such as Danny Devito and Bill Cosby.

So remember when your investing just don't buy anything, make sure you love it and know why your collecting it.

Season Begins

We have our second show “Wild and Wonderful” coming up, an excursion into the worlds created by two distinct artists that have the technical skill to convincingly create alternate places.

The exhibit featuring Erin McFarland and Lauren Pollaro opens at the Bowersock Gallery,with a reception on Friday, May 28, from 7 to 9 p.m. The show runs through June, 15.

McFarland is a woman of vision, with an individual style that convincingly creates a world inhabited by unique creatures. Women with dreamy and haunting eyes move freely in an ethereal wilderness among the animals. The fluidity of McFarland’s style enhances the other worldliness of her uniquely representational imagery.

Pollaro's assemblages of created and found components are deftly worked, and yet appear to have always been in the finished state – always meant to be. Her work appears effortless and predestined. The use and manipulation of medium, and applied paint places Pollaro’s assemblage squarely in the realm of art.

William Thomson is showing with Master Artists, John Singer Sargent, Andrew Wyeth, Winslow Homer, and Edward Hopper just to name a few; at New Britain Museum of American Art, their exhibition; The Great American Watercolor, folks this is HUGE!!!

I highly recommend paying attention to artist William Thomson, if you have always looked at his work and wanted a piece now is the time. I truly believe he will be an artist that will go down in our art history books, as a master painter of our time. To back that up, New Britain Museum of American Art, has an exhibition coming up; The Great American Watercolor Apr. 24 - July 3, 2010 Opening Reception, 2-3:30 p.m. Sunday, Apr. 25, 2010.

New Britain Museum stated in Art New England, this is the first time that they have pulled out their private collection for a show such as this; "Never before shown as a group, 130 of the most distinguished examples will be featured in The Great American Watercolor."

Diane Kirkpatrick came on board as a guest artist at the end of last season, creating an immediate impact. She is now a signed artist.

Having toured our artists’ studios throughout the winter months, witnessing the work each is doing, the season could only be dubbed “Spectacular."

Jane Adams was also brought on board at the tail end of last season. She too immediately resonated with collectors. Adams focus is the figure.

Other artists joining us this season, still life painter - Christopher Pothier, sculptors, Ca rol Roll and Trisha Coates.

Furniture Makes its Mark

Starting this spring the gallery will introduce two incredible furniture designers and furniture makers to our stable of artists; Jack Rodie and George Beland. Although Rodie joined us last year with his Za Zen cabinet, he will be introducing two other pieces this summer starting off with his Cherry Bench arriving the 1st of May.

George Beland will be joining us with his foundation line; affordable and modern, featuring clean lines and thoughtfully balanced proportions - perfect for any cozy urban space or that salty cape cod home. He is one of a handful of hot craftsmen coming out of his local area, creating waves with his different style of story telling. Recently featured in the Portsmouth Herald Spotlight for his show in NYC.

Hi Folks, sorry for the long hiatus, but we have been making planes and preparing the gallery for your arrival. Spring is almost here!

We have a couple new artists, a new look, a refreshed new website, some fresh paint, and a great lineup for you this season. We are still working on the timing and placement of our exhibits, but we do have Michael Palmer, Diana Kirkpatrick, Jeanne' McCartin, Amy Palmer, and Patricia Kaufman booked, just to name a few.

Glorious Water ohh Glorious Watercolor

Dustan Knight is at it again, "Amoskego Falls" by Knight was recently commissioned by New Hampshire State Council for the Arts. What an amazing piece. I saw it in person before the installation and it knocked my socks off, it's a whopping 72" x 48" original watercolor. If your in the area of Manchester, NH I highly recommend seeing the piece in person.

Just installed in the new Library at the Manchester Community College Campus in Manchester NH.

The Arts program is a national program that reserves 1/2% (or there abouts) of a public buildings' overall budget for original art. The process for submitting proposals for consideration is a lengthy one. Artists must first qualify to present through a jury process and then, if they are selected, they go to the site for a tour and building presentation. They have a couple months to come up with a proposal for the site. Usually the folks that live or work at the building site participate in the jurying so they are able to request the art pieces create a certain feeling, or relate to the buildings use or location. Some of the ideas from the group suggested water and reference to Manchester the Amoskeag River. It was the main travel and working route for lumber and transporting wool. The mills along its shores really defined the city in the 1800's and early 1900's. The waterfall is a source of electric power and recently the State has built a salmon ladder. The river is one of just a few North Atlantic salmon spawning river left and many nature conservancy groups have come together to try to make it passable for the fish to travel upstream once again. Its a very fragile project that has actually succeeded to some extent. There are salmon ladder windows that allow visitors to actually watch the fish underwater as they swim upstream against the tremendous flow of the falls. Very dramatic and powerful. "I was thinking about all that plus the effort of being in school and struggling against the real world's demands to seek higher level of understandings. I know I often felt like I was fighting to succeed in my career during my years at school. The library is really where it all happens, you are on your own, pushing ahead...striving."~ Dusta n Knight. It is painted so 'big' - big color big expression.

Figurative Artist Jayne Adams

Jayne Adams is a fine artist whose work is primarily figurative oil paintings on wooden panel supports. Her process is a layered application of drawing, paint, and glazing, creating a surface texture and finish that is significant to the outcome of each piece. Expressive mark making and color layering is sustained throughout, allowing for a varied surface, heightened color, and visual intrigue. Margins often extend beyond the actual image as the subject drifts outside the given painting space. The results are a visual energy that is the undertow for the attention of each piece.

Adams is our newest figurative artist working from live models trying to capture the essence of work and the heaviness of work after a long.

There is so much more going on in these pieces. Adams uses very little color in the figures, sometimes it's the short burst of color that bring the figure and story all together.

We are proud to include Adams as part of our 2010 line up.

What an Experience!

A quick post and run. We are still cleaning up the gallery from our recent adventure. Now, don't forget about our "Gem" show which opens this Friday, November 27, from 2pm to 4pm.

Well, we made it through the show. We are reveling in our recent show, participating in the Boston International Fine Art Show. What an experience we were showing with some of the top rated galleries in the country; galleries like The Cooley Gallery, Quidley and Company, Arcadia Fine Arts, Trees Place Gallery, and many others. Not to mention international galleries like; Galeria Quorum, Spain and Gladwell, and Company, London. Even some Andy Warhols and Laura Coombs Hills were present at this show. Star Studded...

The experience was worth it all, we met some lovely artists, collectors, and enthusiasts, but wow what a lot of work. The exposure was worth it all and we had fun. We wanted to also mention that we met a lovely gallery, Addision Art Gallery, the owner and director were just wonderful, they are in Orleans, MA.

Boston International Fine Art Show

Hi folks, just wanted to give a quick update. Bowersock Gallery will be heading to Boston participating in the Thirteenth Annual, Boston International Fine Art Show. Taking place on November 12th through the 15th at The Cyclorama, located at The Boston Center for The Arts 539 Tremont Street, in the South End.

Our main store, in Provincetown, will still be open (that same weekend,) but we will be at the show featuring new work and announcing our 2010 summer line up. Stop on by booth #3 and visit us.

As we get closer to the show we will be posting the line up of artists and more info about each featured artist. There will also be a sneak piece into their new work before they go to Boston, giving you some in site and first choice to their pieces.

Figurative Figures - Diana Kirkpatrick

Wow, I just had to pleasure of meeting Diana Kirkpatrick and the most exciting part she just joined our team of talented artists. I was so excited about her work I grabbed unframed pieces, which is rare for me, but I knew you would love it. Sure enough two pieces have sold before I even had the chance to post them online. I am currently working on her website page, which should be up shortly but please keep checking.

Not only is Kirkpatrick an extremely talented and professional artist she is such a lovely, and wonderful person to talk to. We are very excited to have an exclusive with Diana. What does this mean, this means Bowersock Gallery will be busting out butt to give her national exposure and raising the value of her paintings. So buy early.

But for now her work will be arriving and posted online as they are completed and finished. I anticipate great things from her. Just so you know she is not a newbie to the industry. She recently just finished up a show at the Portsmouth Fine Art Museum, has had features in Magazines, and is a seasoned painter working for over 2 decades.

Her brushwork and skill is clear in her paintings. This woman knows what she is doing. She just isn't giving you a pretty painting she is telling you a story, and demanding your attention.

Our special occasion, "Fashion the Figure," opens Friday, September, 18th 7 to 9pm. Which will feature a mini fashion show of three select looks by Marc Jacobs, taken from the collection of Provinc e town’s Marc by Marc Jacobs, 184 Commercial St., owned and operated by Robert Duffy, Jacobs’ longtime business partner. These three looks and three Louis Vuitton bags will be auctioned off, with proceeds from the items being donated to the Soup Kitchen in Provincetown, (SKIP).

The event will include a wine tasting with Wellfleet Wine Cellar and Spirits, and appetizers, donated by Farland Provisions.

What is interesting is how different the two art-forms look at the figure. Each looks to capture it and does so in very different ways. One arranges and arrests it in 2-dimention. The other enhances working with the form, draping it in art in real-time. The "Taking Form" Dance

“Taking Form” featured the work of Kim Bernard and Shaune McCarthy. Both two mid-career artists that are known for their strong individual visions that leave indelible impressions.

The opening reception included a special “taking form” dance performance, reflective of the exhibition’s spirit. Two great videos of the dance on youtube. (Taking Form II, and Taking Form).

Both have developed very clear approaches to their art forms. These are highly dedicated artists, in the truest sense of the word, constantly exploring, moving forward, yet somehow maintaining the essence of what makes them unique. Lily Tomlin Hits Provincetown

Get ready for Lilly Tomlin, she arrives Saturday, August 28th to perform her stand up comedy act. Ticket sales will benefit the Provincetown Pilgrim Dog Park.

There is also a silent auction, the night of her show, which will auction off ceramic dog bowls painted by some of Provincetown's local artists; like Harvey Dodd, Shirl Roccapriore, Sally Brophy and yours truly Steve Bowersock.

What a fun project, I forgot how to think outside the box. The experience was wonderful and I encourage all painters to try it. By painting this ceramic bowl it forced me to stop and remember my training and also to try something new with no pressure.

Gesso goes Soy Green

A hot new primer (gesso replacement) that will change the way we paint and our views of paintings. And no, it's not Kilz Primer this is the real deal, Green Gesso. I stumbled upon this a month ago and I really wanted to share this.

“It’s the first of its kind,” Carbee proclaims. “There’s nothing like it.” Created by Marshall Carbee www.carbeesoygesso.com

The paintings are not green in color, but its in the materials. Carbee used a hemp canvas with no frame and petroleum-free paints derived from natural earth pigments. For a primer, he used a soy-based gesso—a non-toxic, non-hazardous, zero-VOC product Carbee helped create. That product, called Carbee Soy Gesso, is now available to all artists.~ The Wire

His gesso uses recycled byproduct from another manufacturer that derives vitamin E from soy. The soy content used in the process is not a food source and will not attract insects, mold or mildew, Carbee says.

Heat + Wax = Encaustic

Kim Bernard has pulled it off once again. She was recently juried into the Saco Museum's exhibit "Heat Stroke": New England wax artists working in encaustic. Juried by Katherine French, director of Danforth Museum of Art in Framingham, MA. and a known figure in the encaustic medium. Yankee Magazine feature>>>

Encaustic is a amazing medium dating back to the fifth Century B.C. and ancient Egyptian times. Recently jumping into the American Scene by Jasper Johns and other postwar painters.

Encaustic- "to burn" in an ancient Greek term. Which is a medium using hot wax (bee's wax) melted, and sculpted creating luminous and translucent layers of color. Allowing the artist to create texture and depth from wax. Encaustic is fast growing in popularity among artists in contemporary art works. More on encaustic>>>

Our oldest and most renowned painter, William Thomson, is a prime example of an artist who has been using the medium long before its popularity. He has been experimenting with different mediums for over 4 decades.

Bowersock Annual Give Back Exhibition

We are opening the season with our “Annual Give Back”,” with a reception on May 2, from 6 to 8 p.m., The event is both a formal exhibition and a fundraising project.

"Lost Wax" Creating Form Part 2 of 3

Don't be fooled by the imitations. A lot of bronze is cast overseas in mass quantities, usually from 500 to thousands, what's unique about that? Nothing. Our sculptors have it done right here in the United States. They like to be hands on for every step in case corrections need to be made.

Here is one way our artists have their pieces cast. "The Lost Wax Bronze Casting."

For instance Lindley Briggs; sometimes will bring the original sculpture and pay the foundry to make the mold for her. Wax is then poured into the mold, creating a wax replica, which Lindley, in turn inspects and signs each piece.

The wax replica is coated with many layers of ceramic, called a ceramic shell. The wax is then melted out of the ceramic shell, then molten bronze is hand poured into the ceramic shell by metal craftsman using the ancient "cire perdue" or lost-wax method.
Casts are then chased, refined and sandblasted at the foundry, which Briggs oversees and directs the patination (is a film on the surface of br onze or similar metals, produced by oxidation over a long period) process with a craftsman who specializes in patinas.

Then they are out for you to add to your collection.

We will launch our season early with a fundraising exhibition, on behalf of "Helping Our Women." This event will feature live music, performed by Sarah Burrill the season's first wine tasting and the event will be catered. Taking place on Friday, May 2nd from 6pm to 8pm.

There are so many little surprises yet to be revealed throughout the season. We are truly excited, about year five, excited about the work we have in store for people and excited about the theme. Creating Form Part 1 of 3

In my next few postings I would like to talk about sculpture. On how I believe its an art form that doesn't receive the attention it deserves. Its as valuable, and complicated as any 2-D work. I always include sculpture with my exhibits it brings in the sophistication.

Collecting sculpture is very unique and it goes with almost any two-dimensional piece as an accent. It can also be your feature piece in your home, office and even in your garden creating a bold statement. Also with sculpture, lighting can play an important role casting beautiful shadows allowing its persona to take on different forms.

The hard part; how do I display it, its not like I can put it on the the wall or can I? Many artists cast reliefs for example Lindley (right) and Jeff ery Briggs cast both 3-D and 2-D. Relief pieces can be hung on your wall just like a painting and in most cases with 3-D, you can either purchase the pedestal or one may be provided for the piece.

In fact, some pieces like Jeanne' McCartin's sculpted masks (above) are meant to be hung on the wall. You should see the shadows her pieces create.

But one thing is clear you better start collecting sculpture fast. The materials themselves are starting to sky rocket, all metals for that matter, which is making it extremely difficult for the artists to keep their prices reasonable. This means there is an enhanced value, not only are you collecting from your favorite artist but one day the cost of the materials will make that piece even more valuable.

Embracing Encaustic

With encaustic becoming a popular medium among artists I wanted to take the time and interview artist Kim Bernard.

First off what is encaustic? The word “encaustic” comes from the Greek, meaning “to burn in”. Encaustic painting is the art of painting with pigmented, molten wax. In painting, a medium is created from a mixture of waxes and resins, melted and pigmented.The technique is one of the oldest painting techniques known, dating back to the first century - Often used in Roman Egypt to decorate mummy coffins and tombs.

How long have you been working with encaustics? "I have been working with ecnaustic, in combination with other materials, for over 9yrs."

What is so special about encaustic? "Encaustic is yummy! It smells good, feels good, its forgiving and allows me to be spontaneous. If I don't like what I've done I can scrape it or melt it off and begin again."

What makes you unique from other encaustic artists? "I am unique from other artists, because my experiences, interests and obsessions are unique, as in true with all of us. I am constantly challenging myself, pushing my work, and asking questions (hopefully the right ones) and exploring new terrain. My work is always evolving. If I ever start doing the same thing year after year, shoot me!"

Where did you come up with the idea, to signature, your piece in Lead? "The lead was a no-brainer in framing my 2-D work since I had been sculpting with lead already. Work begets work. One thing leads to another. As Ani DeFranco put it "I don't know where I'm going , but it ain't where I've been.""

Why lead, why not copper or any other metals? "I use lead because it's very flexible. I can bend it, cut it, wrap it, fold, join it, nail it and sew it. I've welded, cast bronze and I do use copper at times. I like the way materials combine, contrast, harmonize and oppose one another."

This will be one heck of a show. I will name drop later, about all the wonderful artists participating in this show.
Some even have illustrated for "Highlights for Children."

Tess Feltes is one of six illustrators featured in this show. Her illustrations are amazing and are as equal to fine art as any other painter. Here lines, color and foreshortening are spot on giving her subjects a human like personality. Her objective has been to regain a child's original fascination with beauty, combined with the accuracy of the scientific illustration. I was so blown away by her work that she is now part of our collection of fine artists.

Touched by an Artist

First off, "what an amazing painter; William Thomson is truly one of the best American painters alive."

The experience of rifling through over 500 paintings was an experience unto itself. It was the first time in a long while where art moved me in such a way that it gave me goose bumps and put tears to my eyes. (Claudia went with me and both of us had red eyes by the time we were done). It took over 4 hours to go through his entire collection, I could not stop.

Bill Thomson's work creates a multitude of feelings, moods even some harsh realities but what's apparent is the skill of his brush and the use of color. His brush work is flawless using broad and tight strokes, creating soft and sharp edges but they all blend creating a mood in each piece. His color usage is spectacular using mostly earth tones in his pallet. Bill works in all kinds of mediums from acrylic, encaustic, egg tempera, oil to watercolor but somehow they all tie together producing an amazing image.

We are thrilled with the opportunity to add Thomson to our collection.

Represented in collections of; Britain Museum of American Art, Holyoke Museum of Art & History, Mattatuck Museum, DeCordova Museum, Berkshire Museum, and Slater Museum.

Artist Focus: Don Gorvett in American Art Collector

The Gallery just received the advanced copy of American Art Collector Magazine and look who I found featured. Don Gorvett is "Etched in time... "The New England coast and the sea are fundamental to Don's creations, which are also influenced by a romantic passion for history, drama and music. Gorvett produces his reduction woodcut prints on a large French Tool Etching Press. His skills are draughtsman and his understanding of the medium of print are prominent features of his bold graphic style." AAC March Issue #41, pg 170.

There's Something About Jane

When asking Jane some questions, this is what I got. What else could I add? Nothing, I Love it!

Jane Kaufmann has been chipping ice around her kiln and shoveling it down the drive way to a place where the snow bank is low enough so she can throw it up and over the snow. Then she goes upstairs and unfreezes the window sills and opens the window and knocks the icicles down so they won't fall on the heads of guests.

For the past 40 years she has been working in her studio and she tells budding artists to be sure to marry someone rich so you don't have to pay your own way in life. Artists work hard. Why not marry the patron who loves you?

She tells collectors to buy what they like. Professionals can tell you what is "good" but if you don't like it, forget it. What Economy?

I asked some of our artists this question; "Any advice for an artist just starting out in this current economy?" When I originally asked this question I had emerging artists in mind but after reading through the artist's comments, I realized this really wasn't about emerging at all. The question could be for any artist who is working in this current economy.

I became so energized after reading their comments; I knew they needed to be shared.

Any advice for an artist just starting out in this current economy?

"Just work! Get in the studio! This is a great time to focus on making better works, push, stretch, take risks, maybe fail, but explore new territory." -Kim Bernard

"I began sculpting full time during the 80's recession and has a very successful career which supported me as a sculptor for then years. You have to work hard and have a lot of luck (which you create for yourself), and have faith that your work is worth struggling for." -Christopher Gowell

So I said "what economy" these artists have over three decades of experience, devoted their time and lives to their passion and not to mention they are extremely talented. So they must know what they're talking about.

More encouragement is Sotheby's and Art News Blog "But a Christie's auction in New York has blown my theory of an auction slowdown out of the water. The total for the night was an impressive $325 million, which is the second highest total for a post war and contemporary art auction." from Art News.

what would you tell a collector, as as artist, on how to collect?

what inspires you to create art and how do you keep motivated in the studio? Rose Umerlik- "Must create work... I go crazy if I don't... it is easy to stay motivated when you're facing the alternative of going crazy."

Fine Drawings on Porcelain

Tim Christensen-Kirby has returned to the gallery after a major fire that destroyed his barn / studio 3yrs ago. Then after finding a new studio, a major flood came through destroying most of his tools forcing him to pull back from some of his galleries. Well, now he's back and in full swing with new pieces arriving early this spring.

His hand, as always has remained constant and extremely skilled. In each drawing he is creating a narrative about the times in which we live in, and the challenges of living in a world were we are divorced from the natural world around us.

We are pleased to have Christensen-Kirby back as part of our line up for 2009.

Fanciful Rivard Street Plaza Carousel

Last spring, Jeffery Briggs headed up a design team to create a 28-foot carousel in Detroit, Michigan which is part of the Motor City's International Riverfront revitalization project as a ride-able sculpture.

Like Brigg’s cast reliefs, represented here at the gallery, these carousel pole-standers are done in a style that combines magical naturalism, mythical creatures and an art nouvelle style.

What's even more interesting are the drawings done for this project, over 500 were sketched. Each piece had to be approved as a drawing, then as a rough piece and as a completed, painted piece. Some drawings even went through five or six revisions before they were accepted.
In addition, this powerful sculptor will have new bronze relief's arriving this summer. Jeffery is using a new technique implemented into his process which reduces his large reliefs down by 50%. It's an amazing process, which is a water based mixture. This thick liquid is poured into the original large molding then, as the mixture dries, it shrinks down by 50% from the original size creating a new mold. This is then sent to the foundry to be cast in bronze.

Christopher Gowell and Steven Carpenter pair up

The pair will collaborate on a memorial that honors fishermen lost at sea, commissioned by a group of Maine fishermen. The finished sculpture will be installed on the Portland, Maine, wharf.

The concept is set and OK'd and the group is going about the business of raising funds for the project. It could be several years down the line, before the project is ready to go.

Did you know Kim Bernard is president and founder of New England Wax. Congrats Kim we all knew you were a mover and a shaker.

The N.E.W. is a professional group of artists in the six New England states who use encaustic and who share a commitment to exchanging ideas and organizing exhibits. Through organizational meetings, presentations and conferences, N.E.W. provides opportunities to share both technical and aesthetic insights while supporting one another's creative and professional development.
