What draws you to encaustic?

I am enamored firstly with the reference to nature.  Wax is a natural substance and merges very well with my ideas and concerns on many levels:  it makes paper translucent, it adds depth and space to my paintings and it offers my work cohesion.  I love that it can simultaneously reference fragility and strength.

Do you feel that encaustic has changed, advanced, become more accessible? If so why?

I am most excited by observing that more and more artists are integrating paper with encaustic.  Since I have consistently created using both media, I am so excited to see these two ancient techniques merge.  I am almost complete with writing a book entitled Contemporary Paper and Encaustic for which I have interviewed 28 international artists who, in very unique ways, combine these media.  I think as more artists experiment with encaustic they discover the wide potential that wax offers and it's expressive capacity will continue to transform and grow.

What makes your work Distinct?

I’m fascinated with movement, kinesthetics and 

the basic laws of motion so my work is, at its essence, an investigation of movement.  With a background in dance, martial arts and yoga, my kinetic sculpture and 2-D works draw on my personal history and deep connection to body movement.  The driving force of my work would be summarized by the equation, movement + materials = form.

What should a collector or what would you suggest for a new collector to look for in collecting encaustic?

Trust your gut!  To quote Duke Ellington “If it sounds good, it IS good.”  Just don’t leave your new encaustic acquisition in the trunk of your black car in August, while you shop on Commercial Street, or in your Cape Cod cottage while you turn off the heat and head to Miami for the winter.

Caution - "Wet Paint"

Mount Dora is known for its waterfront, antiques art and soon for Pamela Folsom.

Folsom has set up her easel and is out painting Mount Dora, and for seven days capture its people, places, and spirit on canvas.

Her show opens Friday March, 9th 6 to 8pm.

New Year's Resolution

Hi Folks, time flies when your having fun and here we are in 2012. One of my New Year's resolutions is to keep up with my blog, finishing up some thoughts and ideas I started in 2011.

Just a quick update for now.

A few wonderful things has happened with Bowersock Gallery.We just had our first opening at our newest location, in lovely historic downtown Mount Dora, FL. The turn out was better than we had ever anticipated. We met some lovely people, made new friends; best of all, folks found our artists highly collectable. Not to mention that we made it through the Boston International Fine Art show, with wonderful reviews. Thanks everyone for a fabulous 2011.

Also, I just learned that Mount Dora is getting in on the Encaustic movement, somethings happening on January 28-29 2012. I'll fine out more. It's wonderful to see! Art is Alive.

News on Print Maker - Sean Hurley

Wonderful news from our Print Maker; Sean Hurley's "Subterrane" was recently added to the collection of the Ogunquit Museum.

His etchings "Cement Factory" and "Pigeon Cove" were selected by Juror Jim Dine (internationally known printmaker/artist) to appear in the Boston Printmakers 2011 Biennial, opening 2/27/11 at the Danforth Museum in Framingham, MA.

Artists Tips on Approaching Galleries

In my next few posts I would like to share a few tips on artists approaching Art Galleries. This is just from my experience and does not apply for all galleries. Every gallery is different and has their own set of policies and guidelines, but most are similar.

First off before all else. I highly recommend seeking out a professional, in art education and promotion, to teach you the business side to your art. It may come at a price, but from the proper professional it's worth every penny (it will open doors on a professional level). Also, aid you in avoiding those looks from gallery owners when you go in at the wrong time or when their season is in full swing and you ask for representation.

I am fortunate enough to own a gallery, with my partner, and work as an artist where I have been able to put this valuable information to use. I see the business side everyday, but before it all happened I took the time to educate myself though classes, private and credited. Through education, it taught me how to approach galleries and it prepared myself for the business side of art. You may be the greatest artist in the world, but lacking the business sense makes it a bit more difficult in getting your work out there. An individual I recommend truly has helped my career. She opened my eyes to ideas on how to create a strong bio, artist statement, preparation, and what galleries look for from artists (the business side to art). Her name is Jeanne McCartin, maskmakernh@aol.com, seek her out she is worth it and trust me you won't be disappointed.

International Encaustic Conference

Passing this along; conference founder and director Joanne Mattera, in conjunction with the Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill, are pleased to announce that The Fifth International Encaustic Conference will take place June 3-5, 2011 in Provincetown, Massachusetts, with Post-con Workshops June 6-10 at the Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill.

Black and White Friday

We recently had our Black and White Friday exhibition, the latest color-themed exhibition at the gallery. The event was actually a twist on the annual “Black Friday” an economic term for the largest shopping day of the year, the Friday after Thanksgiving, that traditionally pushes business into the black - or profit margin. We thought it would be a fun challenge to use the theme to challenge our artists and it worked. Our artists stepped up to the challenge creating some rare, unique, and wonderful works of art.

Jayne Adams hasn't worked in black and white since her college days, but she stepped up to this challenge and created three amazing pieces.

Kim Bernard became so inspired by the idea she is now creating a series of black and white encaustic's, beginning with two currently on show.


Dustan Knight created her koi series in black and white with just a hint of red. This was a nice surprise to see her stretch her skills as a fine art watercolorist.

Not to mention, Michael Palmer came out of now where and created his Favela series in just black and white ink. The show also feature Jeanne’ McCartin’s wall sculpture from the haunting “Dreams and Nightmare" series.
Even Carol Roll, surprised us at the last minute by creating a small mache sculpture and Lauren Pollaro created a wonderful small mixed media assemblage.

Jayne Adams takes on Halloween

Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition. Halloween has long been thought of as a day when the dead can return to the earth, and ancient Celts would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off these roaming ghosts.

I wanted to share these rare, ghostly and fun paintings by Jayne Adams. They are spectacular, fun, well painted, and the compositions are wonderful.

We are very excited to announce that we will be participating in the Boston International Fine Art Show, November 18 - 21st. This will be our second year participating in this fine event. Swing on by and see us at Booth #3, same booth as last year.

Sydney Bella Sparrow

I recently discovered "Unknown" on my last trip to Thomson's home. He painted this masterpiece in the late 1970's as part of his wind series. This is one of the few pieces left in this series, in fact the only large piece (50 x 40) still available.
